By all accounts this is a great program, so I am keen to use it. Firstly thanks to whoever developed it. Well done.

However I am no compiler expert or Python expert for that matter. If I extract the file into a folder in my home directory how do I then run the Python script. I have Python and wxPython installed, and have tried opening Python using the command line (after cd-ing to the location where I had extracted the program)
I would really appreciate some assistance here guys. Like everyone I would like to backup my Gmail.

First of all thank you for a great tool.

I would like to suggest though that the tool not mark messages as read. I lost all my messages that I wanted to revisit, a lot in folders, now I have no idea what I needed to take a look at again.

I seem unable to run the Linux version on my Ubuntu machine.
I have the wxpython dependency but when I try to execute the program I get an error stating
"sh gmail-backup-gui.sh
RuntimeError: Bad magic number in .pyc file
"

Hi, I am trying with 26GB of email from my gmail account. I hope it works well.

Hi,

In following the directions after someone compromised my email, I saw these postings about backing up your Gmail emails.
HSN sent notifications a couple of days ago that their files had been hacked and the network's customer base emails had been compromised. Fortunately, they SAID the customers' financial info and mailing addresses had not been reached. But, in following up on Gmail's instructions on curing my breached/compromised email, I found by clicking "details" at the bottom of the page the following information about who'd been in my account:

Mobile Bulgaria (77.70.111.125) 2:26 pm (8 hours ago)
Mobile Pakistan (119.155.27.198) 2:25 pm (8 hours ago)

As you can see, two hackers, one in Bulgaria, and one in Pakistan had my email. They sent some email titled "be happy every day" to several of my contacts.

Anyway, I use Ubuntu. Is there a simple, step by step to use this backup. And, are you saying all 34,000 of my email conversations will be downloaded onto MY computer? Or, are they still somewhere "off site" but still accessible to me?

Where does one find the backup utility Mac version?

I am running Fedora 14 which has python 2.7.
Could not install python 2.5. Is there any way to

Find no simple instructions. No "read me." No help.

1. Relationship between this program and Gmail in use -- if this program is used at the same time as the user is signed on to Gmail, will it cause a multiple user problem? Gmail says multiple user (two sign-ins from different points) may result in lockout.

Put another way -- is it necessary to sign out of the account before using this program?

2. IMAP "all folders" reference in instructions. On the settings page for IMAP, nowhere appears the phrase "all folders." How does one enable "all folders" when nothing matches?

From settings page:
(access Gmail from other clients using IMAP)

Status: IMAP is enabled
Enable IMAP
Disable IMAP

When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:
Auto-Expunge on - Immediately update the server. (default)
Auto-Expunge off - Wait for the client to update the server.

When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:
Archive the message (default)
Move the message to the Trash
Immediately delete the message forever

Folder Size Limits
Do not limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder (default)
Limit IMAP folders to contain no more than this many messages

Arch is currently on Python 2.7 (and 3 for that matter). When I attempt to run with 2.7 it says:
RuntimeError: Bad magic number in .pyc file

Please opensource your app or something so these things can be fixed easier..

This is an amazing app but I'm unable to start this app.

I have downloaded 0.107 version on my windows 7 laptop.

I want to download my official mails where my org has taken gmail's domain server to access our emails and all. I want to backup all the sent and received items. But when I open this app & fill the entire necessary fields it generate the error which is as follow:

Error: IMAP: Invalid credentials t2if2327185pbn.364

Where as my password contains @ & numeric signs. & my email is as follow skhiwani@mounttalent.com

So please advise how can i take a backup of sent & received emails.

Please update to a newer version of Python. Python2.5 is no longer available but I badly needs this program because I am migrating mail from my old account to new one and need to preserve labels.
