GMail Backup 0.107

This is the next release of the GMail Backup tool - the ultimate one-click solution for doing backups of your GMail account.

Here is the changelog of this version:

  • The allowed characters in the filenames was even more restricted, now we allow only the folling chars:
    ()+-0123456789;=@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[]
    _abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  • Fixed error in nExceptionMsg, reported for example here.

This version contains only bugfixes since the last release 0.106. It is strongly recommended to use this version.

IMAP & Gmail Labs note: If you are using the Gmail Labs, please make sure that you have enabled the IMAP access into the All Mails folder. You can check this in the Settings/Labels page of your Gmail account. Otherwise, Gmail Backup will tell you, that you are using "Unsupported language of Gmail"!

Bug reporting: Please use our forum for reporting bugs and wishes. Thanks!

Linux note: Under Linux you will need the wxPython (http://wxpython.org) packages installed. It also requires the ctypes module, it should be included in the Python 2.5 distribution. For earlier versions of Python you can find the package in the repositories of your distribution.

Thank your for testing and bug reporting

Much improved

I was able to successfully backup one of my gmail accounts completely (>8000 emails, >750MB) and restored a portion of them to another account. I spot checked one with attachments and they came along as well.

Good work!

Wow! This seems to be just the thing I was looking for. I am eager to download and test it out. :)

Would it be reasonable to

Would it be reasonable to provide a (very raw) way for browsing backupped emails? I think the only important information for a raw browsing could be date, subject and attahcment name. By an HTML doc it would be great I think.

Nice

Very usefull

What has backed up?

Hi
I recently used the latest version to back up an account dating back to 2005. The account overview stated there were 2,401 emails but at the end of the back up I noticed 5009 .eml files backed up. Does the tool restore deleted email?

I come to know about this through local newpaper... I would like to try then i will tell other people whether it is useful or not..

Thanks to google who made this kind of tool..

limited back up

I am a real estate agent and want to have all my emails for one transaction (over 300) backed up into one single file along with the associated attachements. Does anyone know how to do this?

Folders 4 Gmail

A lot of gmail users have folders 4 gmail installed. This gives hierarchical folders instead of just labels. It works using the / character as a level seperator.

I use this and would have to change dozens (if not hundreds) of labels to use your program.

I therefore really think you should offer support for the / character and maybe change it to a - for local use so as not to mess with file systems.

Fantastic work! Thank you.

Very very good for Beta

I really hope GOOGLE buys your company and pays you million$. I was an early adopter of gmail as a consolidation and spam filtering technique. I have 25K+ emails in archive, but lived in fear that all mails could be lost if something happened to Google, or the my digiworld. So now you have produced a simple basic tool with that killer function. Thank you. This stuff is still beta? Nice incremental feature. robust enough to restart if I go up on Proxy/VPN. Dont need a proxy handling feature, just let the program restart after the proxy is disabled. Or restart it when the Internet is up again.

gmail-backup-0107-Tool

sine I manage about 95% of all my correspondence, fax and what so ever else via pc I have to make annually backups of my gmail acct keeping it for the following at least 5 yrs.
It would be very bothersome to save each an every mail as a single item, since - dependign on the mail accout - mails run up to >2000 and above per year.
Now with the gmail-backup-0107-Tool it's easy to do things. That tools is mandatory for every gmail user, that doesn't want to lose any of his mails at any times.
The only problem: most of the time people don't know how to backup gmail and the information on the subject ist quite hard to come by.
Maybe gmail-backup-0107-Tool could been provided automatically to the new users opening an account with Google, i.e. been given the chance of downloading it right from the start.
This would've been very helpful to every body, deciding to use Google as his webmail client.
Other web mail accts have such features integrated with their webmailer so one could dl single mails to the pc on the spot without endlessly hunting for a possibly tool.

Chat backup

How do I in addition to my e-mails also back up the chats? Gmail backup currently does not back up chats.
Thanks
