Examining / manipulating backups with Thunderbird or other local client

Hi,

First: THANK YOU, Jan and Filip, for this nice program! I've just started to use it, and I sure wish I had it when I migrated from "regular" GMail to a Google Apps email account, over a year ago!

I knew of other backup options, but none which preserved the labels, or which had a restore option. (perhaps I just didn't look hard enough...)

Is it possible to selectively move (i.e. backup/restore) some emails from the old account to the new one? I want to avoid duplicates and junk.

Also:

Could someone please point me to instructions on how to configure Thunderbird (preferably) or other local client to my GMail-Backup to examine or manipulate the emails backed up?

Ideally, I would like the option of doing a "safe examine", i.e. one which would not affect the backup, or doing a "manipulation", i.e. deleting or modifying messages, if this is possible.

Thanks!

-Paul

Hi Paul

Hi Paul,
you can easily manipulate the backup directory with your filemanager. You can for example delete email you don't want to restore. You can also assign or remove labels (see labels.txt) file.

Thank you for using our tool

Hi, Jan

Thanks for your reply.

Actually, I was hoping to be able to do more with my backup than look at the tens of thousands of filenames through filemanager.

I would like to see and sort them using Thunderbird or Outlook. It would also be nice if I could index them too. I use Windows Desktop Search.

Thanks,

Reverse backup

I use gmail as a pop3 and smtp server. Thus I keep all copies both on gmail and Thunderbird. I accidentally deleted the mail folder within TB and went to a backup and restored the last version of the mail folder dated 13 Dec 08. TB therefore has missing emails from 13 Dec to 16 Jan 09. Do you know of a way of getting gmail to resend emails for that period?

Hmm I think that is asking for the impossible? I can't see anyway that can be done.
